Obituary of Fred C. Fath
Fred C. Fath, 85, passed away peacefully at home June 17 surrounded by his family. Fred was born in Columbus OH on August 6, 1930. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Evelyn Chapman Fath; a sister, Clara (Fath) Oliver; and a brother, Thomas Fath Jr.; and an infant daughter, Linda.
Fred grew up in Irvington and was an altar boy at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. After graduating from Howe High School, Fred was hired at Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors in Speedway where he spent 48 years as a tech writer and manager. While there, he met and married Barbara Campbell. They recently celebrated 66 years of marriage.
Family was very important to Fred and perhaps his greatest pleasure came from visits with his loving family he and Barbara built, which he now leaves behind. Included are 6 children: Kevin (Toby) Fath; Kyle (Tammy) Fath; Denise (Tim) Quinnette; Scott (Kelly) Fath; Donna (Fath) Miller; and Steve (Lisa) Fath. In addition to his children, he enjoyed 17 Grandchildren: Melissa, Michelle, Alex, Brooke, Kassidy, Jenna, Lauren, Shelby, Lexie, Addie, Avery, Eva, Estee, AJ, Paige, Cameron and Corbin all of whom he loved and made him very proud. Fred became a Great Grandfather recently with the arrival of Jacobi and Vincent. He also leaves behind his caring sister, Alice (Fath) Ward.
Fred especially enjoyed sharing his love of basketball at a very young age as a coach to the Purdue University Extension. Fred was an active member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Speedway, and coached the C.Y.O. teams for St. Christopher for 62 years. His coaching experience spanned nearly 70 years and included the youngsters at the Municipal Gardens. He enjoyed several trips to San Juan Puerto Rico where he coached Championship Tournaments.
His greatest legacy came when he learned that the newly renovated basketball court at St. Christopher gymnasium will be named Fred Fath Court as a testament to his dedication and influence on the young lives in the community. A dedication memorial for the gym will be held later this summer.
Even with his active job and family life, his leisure time was spent on the golf course. He played often enough and well enough to win several trophies and plaques associated with this favorite pastime. Fred was the committee lead for the ‘Old Fogey’ golf league where he enjoyed close friends and fellowship on the course.
Fred will be missed by all he touched – especially his family who excelled under his guidance. He was a stranger to no one and loved dearly by all who knew him! Fred was truly an angel on earth and God has called his Angel home.
Visitation will be Monday, June 20, 2016 from 3:00 PM until 7:30 PM, with a Rosary at 7:30 PM at St. Christopher Parish Activity Center Gym 5301 W 16th St, Indianapolis, IN 46224. A Mass of Christian Burial will also be held at St. Christopher Catholic Church at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 with visitation from 10:00 AM until time of Mass. Mausoleum Entombment to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center 1515 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030. Arrangements entrusted to Stevens Mortuary 5520 W. 10th Street Indpls
