Our History

Our History,  a legacy to be proud of..........

Stevens Mortuary is a family owned and operated funeral home that has served the Indianapolis community and surrounding areas for the past 89 years. We offer a wide variety of services and merchandise to fit any budget, which include traditional services, memorial services, cremations and life celebrations.

Stevens Mortuary has been serving the west side of Indianapolis since 1923. Mr.and Mrs. Charles V. Stevens both, licensed funeral directors, founded the mortuary and opened the first facility at 2831 W. 10th Street.

In 1948, Stevens Mortuary moved to its second location at 3136 W. 16th Street. The new  facility  was opened and operated by Joseph F. Stevens, Sr. In 1974, his  son; Joseph F. Stevens, Jr. became a licensed funeral director and embalmer and joined his father in the family business as the third generation. Stevens Mortuary relocated to 5520 W. 10th Street in September of 1975 and continues to serve the west side of Indianapolis there today.

In 1998, Joseph F. Stevens, Jr. purchased the business from his father and under his directorship, had continued the tradition of a family owned and operated funeral business. Joseph and Deborah Stevens has paid tribute to the  time-honored traditions and diverse history of Indianapolis families. Their goal was successful and it has continued to this day with the same tradition of dedication and family ownership that was started during the 1920's. "We offer our services in order to honor a life that has been lived, and to help comfort those who grieve."

The Stevens family has been devoted to the Indianapolis area and has contributed to its well-being and growth. Community involvement has been and continues to be a focus of our loyalty and continued service to the community where we live.

Joseph & Deborah StevensIn 2012 Joseph and Deborah Stevens had sold the business to Wayne Tago. The facilities of Stevens Mortuary have progressed over time to meet the needs of the community and today the funeral home is now respectfully managed by both Wayne Tago and Joseph F. Stevens, Jr.

Wayne's compassion, professionalism and caring qualities understand that each family is distinctive and has personal wishes and traditions. These wishes and traditions are of the utmost importance to the staff of Stevens Mortuary.
