Obituary of Susan Orr
Susan Dailey Orr, 66, of Indianapolis, passed away with her loving family by her side on December 1, 2012. Susan was born in Buffalo, NY on November 8, 1946 to the late Frank W. and Sara Marie (Williamson) Dailey.
Enthusiasm! Energy! Excitement! Susan Dailey Orr had a passion for Baton Twirling! Her childhood love for performing, competing and teaching the neighborhood to twirl, had evolved through the years into a full-time commitment. She was not just a dedicated teacher of over 45 years - many of her students boasted that they learned principles way beyond baton twirling. Winning was important to her, but so was losing with dignity and grace. Susan graduated from Indiana University with a high school teaching degree, but quickly combined that with the opening of an instructional center where children from ages 4-24, eagerly learned the sport of baton twirling. In 1981, Susan published BATON TWIRLING UNLIMITED, a 268 page book, detailing the intricacies of twirling, strutting, even fire baton. Susan was an NBTA accredited coach and judge who had worked throughout the United States, England and Western Europe. The National Baton Twirling Association honored Susan in 2003, by inducting her into the Hall of Fame. And in 2004, Susan completed her most exciting twirling task yet, BATON TWIRLING UNLIMITED on DVD! Three volumes that teach the magical secrets of her amazing sport! Susan wanted to teach the world to twirl! In 2005, Susan introduced performance-enhancing batons of which she was granted US patents.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Max S. Orr; son, Benjamin Orr; step-daughters, Kimberly Chapman and Tracy Ferrez; grandchildren, Allie and Tyler Orr; and one sister, Sharon Cole. A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday December 5, 2012 in Stevens Mortuary 5520 W. 10th Street, with calling hours from 3 p.m. until service time.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Susan Dailey Orr Scholarship Fund P.O. Box 279 Kenner, LA 70062, in honor and loving memory of Susan Dailey Orr.
