Obituary of Olga Shaneff

Olga (Alexoff) Shaneff, 91, of Carmel, Ind., passed away on March 25, 2020. She was born in Indianapolis on December 15, 1928, to Gavrail and Prusha (Ellcoff) Alexoff, Macedonian immigrants whose heritage and commitment to family and tradition would shape her life. She grew-up in a Westside neighborhood during a simpler time with five and dime stores on the corner and good friends who, in those pre-cell phone days, left messages for each other under rocks. She graduated from George Washington High School, attended Butler University and later Indiana Business College, which gave her skills that she used as an exemplary employee at the State Automobile Insurance Association. Olga married Stephen Shaneff in 1951. For more than 30 years, they owned an Indianapolis restaurant, Steve’s Hot Stew, feeding the south side of Indianapolis with delicious stew, stuffed peppers, cabbage rolls, and other ethnic fare. They had one child, Angeline, for whom they set an example of integrity, hard work and generosity. In true East European style, they dedicated their lives to their daughter’s success. Olga was a lifelong member and devoted volunteer for St. Stephen Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church, where she was a past member of the church board and Sisterhood. She is remembered for organizing entertaining church bus trips to Chicago and Indiana tourist destinations. Wherever she went, Olga filled a room—or a bus--with stories and laughter. Her wit and humor are remembered by all. She loved all types of history, especially family ancestry; was an impeccable seamstress; and enjoyed her coffee and good conversation. Her crowning achievement, though, was being a grandmother, or “Baba,” to Steven. She helped raise him with Eastern European traditions, culture and enormous amounts of food. At her house she played with him for hours, without regard to time or housework. She had her priorities straight. Olga is survived by a daughter, Angeline (Michael) Protogere, and grandson Steven. Her husband, a sister also named Olga, brother Jordan, and beloved older sister Helen (Lenka) preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held privately. A memorial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in honor and memory of Olga can be made to St. Stephen Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church, 1435 N. Medford Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46222.
