Obituary of Marcella Ruth Thompson
Marcella “Marcie” Thompson, 77, of Indianapolis passed away October 17, 2015. She was born January 30, 1938 in Barron, WI to William and Goldie (Ries) Becker, both preceding her in death.
Marcella “Marcie” Thompson was heavily involved in Republican politics since she moved to Indianapolis in 1971. She worked on the staff of Mayor William H. Hudnut III for eight years and also worked in the Marion County Treasurer’s Office and in public information for the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. She served as a Precinct Committeewoman, and as President of the Indiana Federation of Republican Women and Indianapolis Republican WINS. She was a volunteer or paid staff member on many political campaigns, a delegate to State GOP Conventions, and an alternate delegate to the 2008 National Republican Convention. She was honored as Woman of the Year by the Indiana Federation of Republican Women in 2011.
In Indianapolis, she worked as Volunteer Coordinator for WFYI Channel 20 Public Television and FM 90 Public Radio, taught in Continuing Studies and the English Department at IUPUI, and worked as a part-time proofreader for McMillan Publishing Company and as a freelance copy editor. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Indiana University in 1986.
She was very active in Kiwanis International, a global volunteer organization, for over 20 years and served as club secretary for the Riley-Meridian Kiwanis Club in Indianapolis.
In Kansas City, Missouri, she worked in the regional office of Chrysler Corporation’s Dodge Division and as Executive Secretary to the First Vice President of the H. D. Lee Company (maker of Lee Rider jeans).
Her first employment after graduating from high school in Barron, Wisconsin, was in the Agricultural Education Department at the University of Minnesota.
Marcella was preceded in death by her loving husband of 19 years, Russell E. Thompson; sisters, Alice Carson and Vernamae Kindy; brothers, Leon Becker and Russell Becker and nieces, Kathryn Becker, Rebecca Birkholz and Angie Becker.
She is survived by her sons, David ad Mark Thompson; brothers, Wilbert, Allen, Warren and Ralph Becker; sister, Gladys Birkholz; nieces and nephews, Mary Robison, Catherine McCarty, Patricia Scalzo, Robert Becker, Michael Becker, Nancy Peterson, Vicki Pool, Robert Thomas, Tara Staye, Bart Becker, John Becker, Tracy Bunker, Guy Becker, Warren Becker, Wanda Janssen, Kurt Just, Monte Becker, Lyn Moser, Crystal Becker, Lee Chouinard, Ruth Birkholz, Rebecca Birkholz, Russell Becker, Jason Becker, Chana Wood, Brooke Stauner and Derek Stauner.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 24 from 1 pm – 3 pm with a funeral service at 3 pm in Stevens Mortuary, 5520 W. 10th St., Indpls.

Choose Payment Type of Contribution to Kiwanis Foundation of Indianapolis. You may want to enter Terrific Kids Program in the Please Donate Towards box, since that was Mom's favorite Kiwanis program.
