Obituary of John Oliver
John C. Oliver 94, of Indianapolis, passed away February 22, 2011. Born on the Southside on September 7, 1916; he graduated from Cathedral High School in 1934. John retired after 31 years as a supervisor at Link-Belt Chain Division. He enjoyed continued work at Channel 13 and spent 14 years as a volunteer at St. Vincent Hospital. In addition, he gave selflessly of his time to his family and church. He loved his family and rarely missed his children and grandchildren's events. He was an avid reader, crossword puzzle solver and always interested in learning new things. John had a lifelong interest in politics, world affairs and science and history. He was also interested in current events, and was a frequent letter to the editor writer. Interests included gardening, nature, sports, card playing, horseshoes and long walks along the Monon Trail. John resided for the past 14 years at Crestwood Village North, where he enjoyed many social functions and a large circle of friends. John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Dorothy (Donlan) Oliver. He is survived by his seven children, Jack, Tom (Cathy), Bob (Barb), Barb Marquis (John), Patty Enders (Pete), Susan Oslos (Gary) and Joe (Christine); 12 grandchildren, Chris, Brian, Tom, John, Janet and David Oliver, Katie Sommers, Johnny, Andy and Danny Marquis, Beth and Michael Oslos and 12 great- grandchildren. He led by example and his family is his ongoing legacy. It was very important to him to maintain his independence so as not to be a burden on others. If something was broken, he could fix it. He never had an unkind word for anyone. He was a patient and kind husband, father and friend to many. He approached life and the end of life with grace and dignity. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 25, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 3354 W. 30th St. Indianapolis, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in the church.
