I met Lake Central Airlines Capt. Gustafson at a chance encounter at the Akron-Canton airport terminal around 1965. Bad weather had shut everything down. He was deadheading to Buffalo to pick up a Convair 340 trip the next day. I was a student pilot and his mention of Spartan School of Aeronautics stayed in my mind. Other Lake Central and Allegheny pilots that I had met also went to Spartan. Captain Gus was one of the ones who created that spark in me. Two years later I went there and I have been in a love affair with aviation ever since. Its important for people to remember the original Turner Airline pilots. They were held in high regard by the pilots who came later with Lake Central and Allegheny/US Airways. Thank you Captain for taking the time to talk to a teenager so many years ago.
This man has meant so much to me over the years, just one of my biggest supporters at the Sheridan airport and EAA. Encouraging me in every aspect of flying. Knowing he only had weeks left of his life, he was still making sure I had connections to further my flying aspirations. A perfect picture of humility. Having a hard time, missing him terribly. If there's a special place for pilots in heaven, I hope he catches up with my dad. OHHHH the stories.......
I was so sorry to hear that Gus had departed on his final flight West. I had gone to the Aeronca Convention and hoped to see him the other day and now I've learned why he wasn't there. I'll catch up with my friend on the other side now. Gus has been my friend and mentor for the last 50 years and I'll miss him.
Faye and family, I'm very sorry to learn of your loss. Gus was truly a fine gentleman and kind soul. I feel fortunate for having been able to spend a little time with him, and am certain he enriched many lives. He will be remembered and missed.

To Faye, Anne & Nancy: words are difficult at this time but memories are great and fortunately all of us that knew Capt. Gus have wonderful memories. Our visits with you both were always memorable. Gus brought a great sense of humor to the job but also a strong work ethic and professionalism. We will always remember our visits to Oshkosh with Gus. Many thanks for sharing him with us all. Love, Bill & Jacque
