Obituary of William Pfister
William (Bill) H. Pfister, 90, of Indianapolis, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Bill was born on August 21, 1923 in Terre Haute, IN to J.B. & Emma (Welte) Pfister.
Bill attended Garfield High School and graduated from Xavier College in 1949. He then enlisted into the U.S. Army and completed his basic training at Ft. Bragg, N.C., before being stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY. He was deployed to the European Theater during WWII arriving via the Queen Mary along with 15,000 other servicemen, sailing from New York. Bill served his country during the Battle of Normandy (D Day Plus 5), as well as the Battle of the Bulge. He just recently was a participant in the Indy Honor Flight along with 72 other WWII Veterans who were flown to Washington DC on May 10th to visit the memorials that honored their service to their country.
After his service to his country, Bill began a successful career in hotel management that led him from Chicago, IL to Hammond, IN. He eventually landed in Indianapolis, where Bill and his family owned and operated a Dairy Queen franchise, serving countless ice cream cones to the youth (and a few adults).
Bill was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for over 25 years, where his deep faith, commitment, hard work and humility were ever present. He served as parish council president, parish festival volunteer, and could always be found at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway concession stand during the month of May (a major fundraiser for the Church).
Bill was affectionately known in all levels of the basketball community as "The Surgeon," a nickname given to him by none other than Dr. Julius Erving. Over the years, Bill befriended folks such as Clyde Lovellette, Larry Bird, John Wooden, Steve Lavin, Brad Stevens, and Greg Lansing, as well as too many others to list here.
He enjoyed his basketball, auto racing, and loved listening to the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra - led most recently by Nick Hilscher. Most of all, Bill LOVED his wife, Mary Margaret and son, Steve. He will truly be missed by his family, extended family, many friends, and neighbors.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Margaret (Mulligan) Pfister and son, Steve Pfister. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Byrne of Naples, FL and Ann Therese Cronin of Bonita Springs, FL.
Visitation will be held from 9 am - 11am with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am on Tuesday, May 27th in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1375 S. Mickley Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46241.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to one of the charities that Bill held so dear to his heart: Mission Partners Guatemala, 3 FDR Walk, Cincinnati, OH 45218 or Food for the Poor, 6401 Lyons Rd., Coconut Creek, FL 33073.
