Obituary of John Ewing
John W. Ewing, 90, of Indianapolis passed away December 21, 2013. He was born February 25, 1923 in De Land, IL to Eldon H. and Ethel M. (Everdon) Ewing.
John graduated from Purdue University in 1954. He was a quality control engineer in the Allison Division of GM (plant 5) for 41 years, retiring in 1983. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, who was a sergeant in the 21st mobile reclamation and repair squadron. His was a machinist, rifle-marksman and carbine-sharpshooter, who received the battle star for the Battle of Rhineland. He raised three children with Shirley (Walker) Ewing. John was a member of the American Legion, Post 500 and Speedway Christian Church. John enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing, watching all kinds of sports (especially football), Southern Indiana in the fall, being outdoors and sharing time with his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Gordon C. Ewing, Calvin E. Ewing and Eldon Roscoe Ewing.
John is survived by his loving companion and friend, Velma Haboush; daughters, Kathy (Chris) Winks and Sally (Michael) Delp; son, John (Christy) Ewing II; grandchildren, Tony Work, Nick (Lisa) Work, Amanda Ewing, Mitch Ewing and Sarah Winks; great grandchildren, Addison and Ethan Work; step grandchildren, Gina Winks, Jordan Delp, Sophia Haboush, O.J. Laman and step-great grandson Carter Laman.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 3 pm with visitation from 1 pm until service time in Stevens Mortuary, 5520 W. 10th Street Indianapolis.
