Obituary of Josephine Armin

Josephine Katherine (Jo) Armin Jo Armin, 90, of Speedway, passed away January 12, 2013, with her daughters by her side. One of ten children, she was born Josephine Katherine Schmidt on March 7, 1922, in Effingham, Illinois, to Laurence and Frances Schmidt. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Al, who passed away in 1988, and eight of her siblings. Jo and Al, both employees of Eli Lilly and Company, met at the Indiana Roof Ballroom and were married in 1953. Jo was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane (Larry) Smith and Mary (John) Osting and by her cherished grandsons, Eric, Nathan, and David Smith, and Jonathan and Kyle Osting. She is also survived by her brother, Paul (Marie) Schmidt of Effingham, Illinois, numerous nieces and nephews, and her lifelong best friend, Ann Marshall. Her family and friends will always benefit from her love, wisdom, guidance, and common sense. Throughout her life, Jo had a very strong work ethic. During World War II, she began work at Eli Lilly and Company and was employed there for 14 years before staying home to raise her family. Later, she used her talents as a seamstress in her work at the Singer Sewing Machine Company and JC Penney. She retired from IPS in 1986 after working in the library at Northwest High School for 14 years. After retirement, Jo was a valued volunteer at Speedway Public Library where she volunteered each week for over 20 years. She was also a licensed real estate agent. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Harrison Retirement Community and Quality Home Care for their loving support and care over the past several years. The staff and residents surrounded our mom with love and kindness. They have been our angels. We would also like to thank Premier Hospice, Dr. John Munshower, and Dr. John Steenbergen for the excellent medical care and attention our mom received. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 16 from 4 pm - 7:30 pm with a rosary at 7:30 pm in Stevens Mortuary, 5520 W. 10th St., Indianapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 17 at 11 am in St. Christopher Catholic Church, 5301 W. 16th St., Speedway. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Christopher Catholic Church, 5301 W. 16th Street, Speedway, IN 46224 or Speedway Public Library, 5633 W. 25th Street, Speedway, IN 46224.
