Obituary of Joseph Hankins
Joseph Hankins, Jr., 86, Avon, IN, passed away Friday, October 31, 2008, at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born at home on November 29, 1921, in Indianapolis, to Joseph and Lucille Hankins. He graduated from Arsenal Tech High School. During WWII Joe served with the U.S. Navy as a First Class Gunner?s Mate aboard a sea plane tender in the South Pacific. For nearly four decades he worked at Allison Transmission, retiring from his senior engineer position then starting a new career as an engineer consultant for Haggard and Stocking in Beech Grove. Five years ago he retired for good. Joe was a member of Brookside Masonic Lodge, Shrine, Scottish Rite, American Legion and Aero Club (Joe had been a private pilot years ago). Hobbies included worldwide travel with his beloved wife Evelyn, musical instrument repair, working with tools in his garage repairing anything and everything and playing organ and piano by ear. He is survived by spouse, Mary Evelyn Eckert Hankins, daughter Susanne (Kenny) Crandall, sister Irene (Fred) Boughton, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, Steven Leon Hankins. Father Bernie Cox will officiate at a memorial service at the Hankins residence Sunday, November 9, 2008. at 2pm, followed by a reception and celebration of Joe?s wonderful life. Private interment will take place in Sellersburg, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Children?s Hospital. Arrangements by Stevens Mortuary
