Obituary of John Raymond Sneyd
John “Jack” R. Sneyd passed away on September 26,2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and love. Born on November 24, 1934 to Jack and Marcella Sneyd in Terre Haute, IN, Jack graduated from Wiley High School and Indiana State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration. In 1964, he moved to Speedway, IN, with his wife, Dianne, to raise their family.
Jack was married to Dianne (Hofmann) for 42 years until her passing in 2002. In 2011, he found love again and married Margaret “Peggy” (Burke), with whom he shared 13 wonderful years.
A true “numbers guy,” Jack’s career in finance was distinguished. He served as a National Bank Examiner for the US Treasury, First Speedway Bank Manager, Marion County Deputy Auditor, and business owner of Baskin Robbins in Speedway (where his teen daughters gave away a lot of free ice cream to their friends!) In 1979, Jack was elected Clerk Treasurer of the Town of Speedway, serving five terms from 1980 to 1999, managing the town’s finances, and working closely with the Town Council.
Jack’s passion for community service was evident in his involvement with the Lions Club, 500 Optimist Club, Saint Christopher Church Pastoral Council and Finance Council, GOP Precinct Committeeman, Zoning Appeals Board, Speedway Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and Speedway Police Commissioner.
An avid IndyCar race fan, Jack attended over fifty Indianapolis 500s and numerous F1 and Brickyard 400 race events at IMS. He was also a devoted fan of IU Basketball, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Indianapolis Colts. Jack was deeply engaged in national and local conservative politics.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dianne Sneyd, his brother Richard Sneyd, and his grandson Graham Russell. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret “Peggy” Sneyd, his children Beth (Mike) Nickels, Theresa (John) Peterson, Mary (Gil) Keller, Julie (Mark) Russell, and Andy Standish, as well as 12 grandchildren: Ashley, Griffin, Carson, Scott, Eddie, Sam, Grace, Jack, Alex, Molly, Owen, and Kylee, and 2 great-grandchildren: Nolan and Tatum.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to the Saint Christopher Student Assistance Endowment Fund.
Jack’s life was a testament to his love for his family and his community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
