Catherine Avant Harris, 85, of Indianapolis passed away on January 25, 2016. She was the youngest of eleven children, born on May 28, 1930 in Oxford, MS to Allen Burgell and Angeline (Toles) Avant. At the young age of twenty, Catherine moved to Indianapolis in 1950 and stayed with her brother, Rev. Conwell Avant Sr. until meeting and marrying Mr. Earl Harris in 1951 and in that union were three children. They were married for thirty years before Mr. Harris went home to be with the Lord. Catherine was the youngest of eleven and the last surviving of the Avant children. Catherine accepted Christ at the age of 14 at Harrisonville Baptist Church in Oxford, MS. She joined the St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in 1952 at the age of twenty-two under the leadership of Pastor A.M. Hughes. She served on the Usher Board # 1 for twenty years. Catherine worked for the IPS School # 59 from 1973 until her retirement in 1993. She was a quiet, blunt and truthful person with a different sense of humor. She loved the simple things in life and loved her family. Catherine loved to garden and often grew various vegetables. She was a devoted wife, nurturing mother. She will be greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings; Essie B. Avant-Mitchell, Anna Bell Avant-Joiner, Martha Avant-Ford, Ora-Lee Avant-Hall, Dan Avant, Major Avant, Rev. Conwell Avant Sr., Mathaus Avant and Frank Avant; She leaves to cherish her memory, sons, James Allen Harris and Rick Harris; nephews, Anthony, Bryan, Tracy Avant; Conwell Avant Jr., nieces, Glennie, Josaphine, Denise, Phyliss, Sarah and Kathy and a host of relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life and Home Going will be 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2016 at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church 5325 E. 30th Street Indpls, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in Sutherland Cemetery.
