Obituary of Velinda M. Sanders

Our mother, Velinda Maria (Ferguson) Sanders was born on July 28, 1957 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was the 4th of 6 children born to the union of the late Roy Stanley and Audrey (Riddick) Ferguson. She enjoyed her childhood surrounded by her parents, five siblings, and grandparents along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Velinda at an early age professed her hope in Jesus Christ and was baptized becoming a member of Mt. Paran Missionary Baptist Church where she was an active member of various choirs. After her marriage, she moved her membership to Shiloh A.O.H. Church of God where she rededicated in 1981. On January 23, 1985 she moved her membership and raised her children at Light of the World Christian Church serving under Bishop T. Garrett Benjamin Jr and later Rev. Dr. David A. Hampton. For 31 years she was a faithful member of the alto section of the Voices of the Light Choir and Robe Room Worker. In addition and at various times she was a member of New Light Ensemble, Sages Senior Choir and volunteered for the food pantry and the annual Christmas giveaway. Velinda enjoyed cooking, spending time with her family, serving in the music ministry of her beloved church, watching movies and listening to her Gospel and R & B Music. She was well loved and will be missed by her Pastors and church family. Velinda held a wide arrange of jobs during her employment. She worked at various daycare centers because her love for children. In addition, Velinda held numerous positions with health insurance companies, the last being Liberty Mutual Insurance in 2010 before her disability retirement. While in high school, Velinda met and later married her former husband, Edward Julius Sanders, Sr on September 8, 1975 in Indianapolis, IN. They shared in births of 5 sons, Edward Julius, Jr, the twins Roy Stanley and James Lee, Sherman, Kelley and Steven Micah Sanders. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Velinda Marie Sanders departed this life after a short illness on Saturday, March 5th 2016 at age 58. She was preceded in death by a son Sherman K. Sanders, her parents and two brothers, Steven and Keith Ferguson. She will be missed and always loved by her four sons Rev. Edward (Pastor Yolanda) Sanders, Jr, Roy, James and Steven Sanders; two grandchildren, Lindsey Shelton and Kobe Sanders; two great-grandchildren Destiny Shelton and Zion Rendell; two sisters, Rev. Carolyn (Delbert) Pickens and Sheila (Willie) Hawkins; brother Stanley (Jane) Ferguson; three aunts, an uncle and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as three special friends who were bonus sisters Sharon Warfield, Frances Howard and De Ivory Hampton.
