Obituary
Obituary of Carolyn Swanigan
Ms. Carolyn Swanigan was born on January 31, 1941 in Indianapolis, IN to the late Alfred Sr. and Sadie Mae Swanigan. There were eleven children born to this union, eight sons and three daughters.
She accepted Christ as an early age and became a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. S. D. Hardrick.
Ms. Swanigan received her elementary education in the Indianapolis Public School and was a proud graduate of Arsenal Technical High School class of 1958. After high school Carolyn was employed at Army Finance Center as a key punch operator.
Ms. Carolyn Swanigan had a heart and passion for fashion and etiquette. She properly prepared herself by graduating from Cordie King Castle for Modeling and Charm. Carolyn was one of the first professional African-American models for L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis, IN which opened doors and Carolyn relocated to Los Angeles, CA where she was a successful professional model for over 30 years.
Ms. Carolyn Swanigan has been featured in the Indianapolis Star, the Indianapolis Recorder, Ebony magazine and most recently in the Indiana Historic Society. Ms. Swanigan was a noted pageant judge for numerous events in the United States and in the Philippines.
After modeling for over 30 year Carolyn worked for Blackshears Grading and Marking Service as Office Manager and Payroll Supervisor before returning to Indianapolis to become caregiver for her elder sister and brother-in-law until their death.
Ms. Carolyn Swanigan made her transition to eternity on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at the age of 75 years old. She is preceded in death by six brothers, Richard, Alfred Jr., Earl, Donald T., Beryl B., and Melvin; and two sisters Amelia McLucas and Joyce Barnett.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two brothers, Kenneth Swanigan of Renton, WA and Oscar Swanigan (Ellen) of Indianapolis, IN; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
She will be missed by all. She is at peace now, and one day we will see her again.
