Obituary of Lee Henry Jones

Lee Henry Jones was born on October 29, 1941 to Richard L. and Betty M Jones in Indianapolis, IN. Lee was the oldest of three siblings, Sara and Stephen Jones, both of whom are now deceased. During his life, he was a father to two sons, Richard and Christian, plus one daughter, Edith. He also became a grandfather to Maxwell and Jasper Jones, and a third grandchild is due at the end of September 2016. Lee was born to be a musician, and his passion never flagged throughout his long career. He started playing on a borrowed clarinet and an early age and never looked back. During high school, he was involved in the All City Band and the Shortridge High School music program. While in college, he furthered his musical career spending a summer playing on a barge for the American Wind Symphony Pittsburg, PA. Lee continued his playing career by joining the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis, The Scottish Rite Orchestra, the Athenaeum Pops Orchestra and later in years the Bloomington Orchestra. Lee was also very involved in the Indianapolis Symphonic Band especially when Bob Phillips was the Director and Conductor. There were also several others groups that he either created or joined: a Saxophone Quartet called Quarter of Sax. There was the Jazz Renegades, the Barton Rogers Dance band, the Slaughterhouse Five Woodwind Quintet, and many more that he would combine in order to put on a performance. 1993, Lee quit a sales job at JT International to open up the Horsemen's Resale store in downtown Indianapolis. Having learned the trade as an apprentice and avid horseman, he combined a retail business with harness and leather repair, and brought years of skill and a love of craftsmanship to a specialized field in Indianapolis. In 1998, he and group of other people collaborated to create the Phillip Music Guild. Lee was very involved in this organization which is based on mentoring young musicians. This organization is still mentoring young musicians of Marion County today. On January 16, 2005, Martin University bestowed upon him an Honorary Doctorate Degree. From that point on he was fondly known at Dr. Lee. This was a very special moment in Lee's life and he was deeply moved by people that honored him. Then in 2009, he became the Conductor for the Athenaeum Pops Orchestra. He enjoyed the opportunity given to him by the orchestra. The music was always varied and most definitely unique. Lee had a very full and rich life and touched the lives of many people in this area. He was a good friend to many and a mentor to even more. He has left a mark on the music community in this town. Memorial Service will be September 11, 2016 at Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ, 603 N. New Jersey, Indianapolis, IN 46202 from 2PM to 3:30PM. A private ceremony will take place in the Spring of 2017 where he will be taken to the family cemetery in Bloomfield, Indiana.
