Obituary of Susan Marie Nelson

Susan M. Nelson of Indianapolis, age 67, passed away at home on January 14, 2023. She was born in Harlan, Kentucky on November 18, 1955 to John and Virginia Yose. Sue’s family moved to Lawrence, Indiana when she was 12. She attended Lawrence Central High School and went on to attend Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana on a scholarship granted due to her musical talent. Sue’s love of music and playing the oboe was kindled at a young age in Kentucky and it continued throughout her entire life. Sue played with a number of symphonic and band organizations around Central Indiana and in many chamber groups. She also played in musical theater productions, churches and in numerous other venues. Sue shared her love of music by teaching students privately at home, Avon High School and the University of Indianapolis. Sue’s employment was also music-related. As the Pad Department Manager for Straubinger Flutes, she oversaw the production and shipping of flute pads to an international clientele of manufacturers and repairmen. She was known for her pleasant demeanor with her customers and her diligence to address their needs. Sue developed many friendships across the globe with clients and musicians. Sue possessed a deep faith in God and had many dear friends in her church community. She expressed her faith through her participation in her church’s choir.

Sue is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Gary Nelson; daughters, Kim Bartley and Kristen Nelson; Grandchildren, Zachary Byers, Aubrey Cogell and Laila Nelson; and sister, Glanda Farley. Sue was preceded in death by her sisters, Phyllis Yose and Joyce Wolfe, and her brother, Joseph Yose.
