Obituary of James D. McGovern

James “Jim” D McGovern of Whitestown, IN age 83 years old peacefully passed away in his sleep, with family by his side on July 14, 2022. Jim was born in Indianapolis, IN (Marion Co); Parents: Edward “Terry” McGovern and Mary (Schrader) McGovern. Jim grew up in Indianapolis, his mother passed away when he was young in his tween years, his father could not care for him and hislittle brothers on his own, so they were sent to an orphanage in Vincennes IN. He was released at the age of 15 years old deemed to be of age to be independent. Recently, he said that was the happiest day of his life. He went on to join the army and he got married, he got his siblings out of the orphanage becoming their guardian. Jim was a devoted father, grandfather, brother and uncle he loved his family and friends dearly.  He retired from Amtrak and prior owner of IMC Inc.  He was a US veteran (Army MP), and a humanitarian giving to causes for children in need and orphanages. He was a member of (Zionsville) St Alphonsus Catholic Church, he loved to support the Knights of Columbus. He was very proud of his grand-nephew becoming a Priest. He was a member of the American Legion for the past 9 years; they became an extended family to Jim and his daughter. Jim loved going to a nearby casino or Vegas for playing poker, slots and betting on the horses! He loved to travel but some of his happiest days were hanging out at home with his dog, Lucky, or kicking a ball in his yard with his grand-daughter, Jenna. He was a straight shooter, called it how he saw it and it made people laugh.  Irish to the end… he was a betting man and he won big, he defied all odds and lived out his life on his terms; nobody could tell him different. He will be forever missed and lovingly remembered.    Jim was preceded in death by his wife: Pat (Hagen) McGovern; his brothers: Joseph, John, Robert, Michael, Thomas, Donald; his son: Glen McGovern;  Grandkids:  Neka Maddox and Logan McGovern. Jim is survived by Children: Sean McGovern, Maureen (McGovern) Leland, Eileen McGovern, Michael McGovern, James “JD” McGovern, Cathleen McGovern (Quigley); his siblings:  Terry McGovern and Mary-Jo (McGovern) Seveska; ten grandchildren and one great grand child.  Calling All Family:   July 29, 2022 1PM Mass at St Alphonsus Zionsville; (1870 W Oak St) 2PM Graveside Service: Salem Cemetery Zionsville (6701 S 800 E)  Calling All Friends: JOIN US IN CELEBRATION OF JIM:   JULY 29, 2022  3PM  (Post 79) Zionsville American Legion (9950 E 600 S) Condolences / Support: Josiah's Ride C/O Zionsville American Legion Post 79 (helps local children battling cancer)  9950 E 600 S, Zionsville, IN. 46075
