Obituary of Michael Schenk
Michael C. Schenk 72, of Indianapolis, passed away on April 3, 2010. He was born on October 6, 1937 to Edward and Helen Schenk, both of whom preceded him in death. Michael graduated from Cathedral High School in 1955. He retired from the Indianapolis Fire Department in 2005, as a Battalion Chief after 43 years of service. Michael was a past president and board member of the I.F.D. Local #416 and was a visionary leader for Indianapolis Firefighters Union Local 416. As president, he purchased Old Firehouse #2 and started renovation on this historic structure. His plan was to create a facility to teach children Fire Safety (Survive Alive) and a place that would preserve the rich history of the I.F.D. It was not a popular decision at the time but through his leadership these projects have become a cornerstone of the fire department and the community at large. Mike was also a member of the Emerald Society and Firefighters Retiree Club. He participated in Senior Softball and the Hitter's Club; loved running, ran in several marathons and still kept in contact with his classmates from St. Anthony and Cathedral High School. Michael was preceded in death by his parents and grandchildren, Sara Mullins and Colby Flanary. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Rosner) Flanary-Schenk; sons, Michael, Chris, Joe (Gina) and Scott Schenk; step-son, Jeff (Melissa) Flanary; daughters, LeeAnn and Sharon Schenk, Heather Roush-Schenk; step-daughter, Lisa (Sean) O'Connor; mother-in-law, Francis Fairringer; sisters, Mary Davis, Helen Anne and Rita Schenk-Warren; brother, Edward (Cathy) Schenk; 25 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Stevens Mortuary & Family Center, 5520 W. 10th St., Indianapolis, from 4-7:30 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. rosary.
