Obituary of Charles Russell Johnson

Charles Russell Johnson (better known as Charlie) was born on April 6, 1948 in Dayton, Ohio. He took a walk with God on the morning of August 21, 2020, at the age of 72 years old. One of Charlie’s biggest accomplishments was being a father, a real family man. He was always ready to hit record at his kid’s events with his “Back to the Future” VCR tapes. Him & Diane even received awards from the different schools for their attendance to their kid’s activities & school sports. He loved to play Santa Claus! Weekends included: camping at Red Brush Park, camping/boating at Lake Lemon, annual family reunions in Jackson, KY for Meetings on the Hill & the Honey Bee Festival. But, really his favorite part of KY was simply driving all over Jackson to stop by, sit on everyone’s porch & visit… he loved to tell stories, more stories & then repeat those stories; just in case you missed something. We usually stayed at the Jackson Inn & never missed time to eat his favorite burgers at the White Flash. Charlie loved his animals. You may remember a few dogs: Cash, Daisy, Rocky... he also had pet raccoons, pet squirrels, and a horse named “Slick!” He loved his cars, motorcycles & anything to do with racing. He loved to race himself; but he also enjoyed being a spectator with his family & friends including: Figure 8 racing on Friday nights at Kitley, (The Speedrome), hill climbs in Metamora, following his best buddy Roger (Mr. Backwards), to watch his jumps, Nationals (drag racing) out at Lucas Oil, or simply packing up all his four-wheelers and toys with his family & heading out to Grandpa Elisha & Elva’s house or the “5 acres” to visit, eat garden fresh tomatoes and play all weekend. Charlie never missed a meal. He loved treating the whole family to a good smorgasbord, like Ryan’s or Ponderosa; or Chi-Chi’s for all the birthday celebrations. The garage doors always closed at 12 Noon sharp for dinners at Old West Street Garage; dinners included Ginza on 38th Street, where they called him Big Daddy! What’s for supper? Man’s Grill, of course! Or, most likely, there was a surprise in the oven that he made Diane cook… pork steaks, butt, tongue, frog legs... And… make sure you bring him an ice-cold Pepsi! One might say he had plenty of kids so we could all take turns to get his Pepsi so he didn’t have to move off the couch! But the truth is… he wanted a son. Finally, Elisha Dale would carry on his last name. Charlie was preceded in death by his loving mother, Mable Bryant Wilson, his first son, our brother, Charles Johnson Jr., (Little Charlie) and his daughter, our sister, Christina Johnson. His final resting place will be right next to his Mommy. We are sure she will be so happy in heaven, since we all know Charlie was her “favorite!” Surviving to cherish his memory are his father, Elisha Johnson of Shelbyville, IN; Diane Johnson and their children together; Karen Johnson (Tyler May) and Elisha Johnson; their 8 grandchildren together: Chase, Chance, Jaylen, Arthur, Andrew, Baby Elisha, Malaki, and Keygan; and their 2 great-grandchildren: Kaiden and Landyn. Patty Johnson and their children together; Sandra Dee Johnson and Stacey Johnson; He also leaves behind his 2 favorite sisters, Joy York (Danny) and Karen Johnson; & his brother, Doug Johnson (Peggy). Charlie had so many good friends… Roger, Ernie, Jerry, Chip, Charles & Jr., to name a few. He had countless nieces & nephews; whom all would agree, he was their favorite Uncle Charlie! “Adoption” and “guardianship” were familiar terms. He never hesitated to help so many of his children’s friends, and step in as their father figure. He would lend a hand to help, anyway he possibly could. He treated his extended family and everyone around him like his very own family, without judgement. He will be dearly missed. We love you Daddy!
