Obituary of John F. Medjeski Sr.
John F. Medjeski Sr., of Brownsburg, Ind., loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 94 years old.
John was born on May 4, 1926 in Indianapolis to John and Bertha Medjeski. He graduated from Holy Trinity Grade School in 1940 and Arsenal Technical High School in 1944.
After high school in 1944, John was drafted into the army and fought in combat in the Philippines and was in charge of a 1st Cavalry Regiment Platoon of 38 men in Japan. He completed his service in 1946 after attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant.
After the military, John attended college at Butler University, using his passion for music to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in 1950 and a Master of Music in 1955.
While in college, John met and married the love of his life Rosemary Gazvoda on May 29, 1954. This year, they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.
After college, John used his music education to teach others the joy of music through band and vocals at Carthage High School in Carthage, Indiana for 7 years. He then was the Orchestra Director at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis for 23 years. John also taught at various Junior High Schools throughout his career, instilling the love of music to children of all ages.
In addition to music, John was a talented carpenter, craftsman and woodworker. He enjoyed building, refinishing and creating, especially when he could work with – or create for – his children and grandchildren. John loved music and was a member of the Haughville Slickers and played viola for Scottish Rite Cathedral events.
John was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church where he was an altar boy as a child and helped to direct the choir.
He is preceded in death by parents John and Bertha Medjeski; son, Steven Medjeski; and brother, Edward Medjeski.
John is survived by loving wife, Rosemary Medjeski.; children, Michael Medjeski (Lynne), Suzanne Page (Michael), John Medjeski (Lori), Terri Medjeski, and Cindy Johnson (Scott); 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews; and other beloved friends and relatives. He will be greatly missed by all of his family, friends and the lives that he impacted throughout his career.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at 10 a.m. at St. Malachy Catholic Church 9833 E. County Road 750 N. Brownsburg, IN 46112.
