Obituary of Marie Hatch
Marie Martel Hatch
Marie Martel Hatch, died peacefully on April 30, 2019 in Indpls. of Covid-19 at age 95. Born on Nov. 7, 1924 in Wilder, VT and raised in Lebanon, NH, she was the third of four daughters of Lucille Thibodeau and Theodore R. Martel. She was the mother of 5 children and lived most of her life in Indianapolis.
Marie valued education above anything else. She was a proud graduate of the U of Mich, where she received her BA in history in 1947, and worked on an MA in Special Education at Indiana U. of Indpls. Marie taught high school and middle school in the Indpls. public and parochial schools.
Anyone who knew Marie would know that she held herself to the highest of standards and expected nothing less from her family and friends. She was especially attentive to the education and lifelong development of her son, Robert, who was stricken with Encephalitis as a baby, and was proud to have sent all of her daughters to “good schools.” A talented writer, Marie wrote many stories of her childhood memories and other noteworthy events in her life, some of which were published in local newspapers and the Franco-American Journal, Le Forum. She is listed in the Anthology of Writings of Franco-American Women.
Marie had an extensive knowledge of the American Civil War and Abraham Lincoln, a life-long interest. She was revered by all for her baking skills and never met a plant or an animal she didn’t like. You could count on her to take a stand for the defenseless and on any other cause she deemed worthwhile.
A devout Catholic, Marie was predeceased by her husband, Robert W. Hatch, her eldest daughter, Kathlyn N. Hatch, and her son, Robert M. Hatch. She is survived by three daughters, Mary E. Hatch of Brooklyn, NY, Julia H. Miller, of Chevy Chase, MD, and Patrice M. Hatch of Carmel, IN, her two grandchildren, Benjamin H. Miller of Grayslake, IL and Rebecca H. Miller of Washington, DC, and her sister, Sybill M. Trachier of Salem, N.H.
A private family service will be held at Stevens Mortuary, 5520 W. 10th St., Indpls. Burial: Crown Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marie’s memory to Indiana Landmarks, 1201 Central Avenue, Indpls., IN 46202, or Angel’s Rest Animal Society.1273 W.
