Obituary of Mildred McClurg

Mildred McClurg, 91, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, March 29, 2020. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 34 years, Wayne (Coy) McClurg, her parents, Lucy and Ben Knuckles, and eleven brothers and sisters. She is survived by sister, Nola Doll of Danville. Mildred was born May 14, 1928 in Bell County, Kentucky. Here she cared for her family – helping to raise her siblings in the mountains. Mildred worked at a local peanut factory (Peanut Products) early in her career where she caught the eye of her future husband. Mildred was then the local favorite at the Kmart deli for some time where she was known for serving delicious sandwiches. In later years, she found herself employed as a factory worker at Jenn Air Indianapolis, she finished out her career at Roselynn Bakery before retirement. As a loving mother and grandmother, being with her family was her number one priority. As a traveling duo, she enjoyed long-distance traveling with her husband – a lifelong truck driver. When home, she would join him and their children at the local fishing ponds. Mildred loved to get up early on a Saturday morning to rush to garage sales to get the best picks. She was the ultimate caregiver to her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; often found playing games, cooking her signature recipes and she could be often heard telling stories. A favorite past-time for Mildred, was watching soap opera and completing word search puzzles teaching her friends that the best way to find a word when all else fails, is to “turn the book upside down.” She is survived by her devoted daughters Sheila Kay Britt (Jim); Gaythel Elaine Holmes (Bruce Settle(deceased)); grandchildren; Michelle Grady (Shane), Stacy Britt-Hart (Shane), Jason Holmes, Nicole Holmes, Monica Payne (Lou), Melanie Holmes; great-grandchildren, Shayna, Evan, Emma, Makayla, Mason, Andrew, Kayden, Lucy, Khloe and Jasper. Memorial contributions in Mildred’s honor may be made to CICOA Aging and In-Home Solutions with designated benefit to the Meals & More program; and organization that delivered nutritionally balanced meals to Mildred every two-weeks and for whom she personally supported when her finances allowed.
