Obituary of Geraldine Rockwell

Geraldine Knarr Rockwell, our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on November 13, 2009. She had resided at the Westside Garden Plaza on West 10th Street in Indianapolis for the past five years. Geraldine was born in Morgan County, Indiana, on May 27, 1912, to Anna Lillie Wilson and Frank Edgar Phillips. She grew up in the Stilesville area and graduated in the Stilesville High School Class of 1929. She had 10 brothers and sisters, all of whom have preceded her in death; they were Henry Earl, Bertha Delle, Hertha Belle, Pearl Lettie, Floy Ethel, Elvin Edgar, Howard Roscoe, Nellie Gladys, Kenneth Wayne, and Joy Evelyn Phillips. Her many nieces and nephews have given her much joy throughout the years of her life. On June 7, 1931, Geraldine married Herman Gilbert Knarr of Noblesville, IN. Together they raised five children, all of whom survive: Ronald Leon (wife: Jean Jarboe) of Indianapolis, James Knarr of Indianapolis, Gerald Alan (wife: Mary Ritchey) of Kouts, Marilyn Sue (husband: Vincent Green) of West Lafayette, and Vinton Neil (wife: Carol Stout) of Bloomington, IL. They had twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Following Herman?s death in 1983, Geraldine was married to Ivan Rockwell of Mount Vernon, Ohio, who also preceded her in death. Geraldine was active in the Grandmothers? Club, Westside Christian Women?s Club, and Delta Sigma Kappa Sorority. She worked for many years for Wm. H. Block department store. She fondly remembered her friends from each of these organizations. Geraldine was always active in her church - teaching and being involved in missionary circle groups for many years at Lynhurst Baptist Church. She was instrumental in starting two other American Baptist churches in Indianapolis- Church of the Master on North Girls School Road and Covenant Baptist Church on West 30th Street. Her greatest pleasure in life was spending time with her family. She loved to play Scrabble, work crossword puzzles, sew, crochet, and quilt. Her lovely soprano voice and her piano playing were used primarily in the churches in which she served. Her love of God and her family, as well as her passion for her church, were utmost in her life?s priorities. Many benefited from her kindness and generosity. There will be a memorial service at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 21, 2009, at the Lynhurst Baptist Church at 1250 S. Lynhurst Drive, followed by a time for visitation at the church until 4:00 pm. There will be a private burial at Stilesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity or your choice or the Lynhurst Baptist Church Community Center, 709 S.
