Obituary of Betty Mabis

Betty Mabis passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at the age of 95.  She was born on June 4th, 1928 in Paxton, Indiana and grew up on a farm with a younger brother and sister.

Betty wed Harold (Bud) Mabis on April 23rd, 1950. They moved to Indianapolis and started a family which grew to four children.  Betty focused on raising her children, but also become involved with the Avon United Methodist Church, where she ended up serving in the church for over 75 years, working in many different areas, one being Newcomer Ministry to welcome new members to the church.

In 1958, she worked to develop the first Kindergarten program in Avon which was held at the church until 1977 when she successfully had the program adopted by Avon Schools.

She worked at the Avon Grade School cafeteria for 22 years, some of those years as supervisor and retired in 1995.

She volunteered at Hendricks County Hospital for 23 years.

Betty enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids.  She traveled a lot, some of her memorable trips were a trip to the Holy Land, the Walk to Emmaus and she spent a week in New Orleans serving food after Hurricane Katrina.

She loved her family, friends and her church community and will be dearly missed by all.  

Betty is survived by her children, Dana (Sharon) of Tampa, FL, Diane of Savage, MN, Donna (Donny) of Indianapolis, IN, Darrin of Savannah, GA, eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud and siblings, Fred Chaney and Kathleen Takash.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 20th at Avon United Methodist Church in Avon, with a memorial gathering beginning at 11:30 AM until time of service.
