Dr. William Baker was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on July 18, 1925, the son of Essau and Alabama Baker. He passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Dr. William C. Baker, Prominent Local Oral Surgeon. He was a candidate for Marion County Coroner. An influential Democrat, he headed many important county committees. Dr. Baker was a Precinct committeeman in the 20th ward and was a member of the Indiana Democratic Club, Model Cities Health Care Task Force, former Vice President of the Butler Tarkington Neighborhood Association and board member of Park-Tudor School. Dr. Baker was a delegate to the Democratic State Convention and the Democratic National Convention. He headed both the Democratic Screening and Platform Committees. He graduated from Indianapolis State University and received his Dental Degree from Indiana University. He served his internship and residency at Indiana University School of Medicine. Among his other affiliations were Pershine Shrine 46, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Chi Delta Mu Fraternity. He was an Ordained Minister and Deacon and a member of Christ Temple Apostolic and Witherspoon Presbyterian Churches of Indianapolis. Dr. Baker was a member and the first African American admitted to membership in the America Society of Oral Surgeons as a specialist. He was a member of the staff of several hospitals, Methodist, Winona, General and St. Vincent. Dr. Baker taught oral surgery at Indiana Dental College. Dr. Baker was preceded in death by a son, Dr. William C. Baker Jr.; brothers, Essau, John, James, Samuel and Hoover; sisters, Luberta, Alberta; and parents, Essau and Alabama Baker. Dr. Baker is survived by four sons, Michael T. of Indianapolis, IN, Stephen L. (Brenda) of Dallas, TX, Patrick Appleton (Katrina) of Carmel, IN, and David L. (Tracey) of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by a sister, Viola Davis (Aaron) of Chicago, IL; as well as eight grandchildren, David, Stephanie, Michael I., Kennedy, Stephen Jr., Patrick Jr., Joshua and Jessica. Dr. Bakers favorite spiritual song was Amazing Grace.
