Samuel Robinson

Obituary of Samuel L. Robinson

Samuel (Sam I Am) LaRoy Robinson was born June 15, 1960, to the late Robert Robinson and the late Dorothy Ann Knox Robinson-Mitchell in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was educated at John Marshall High School of Indianapolis and graduated from Whites Creek High School of Davidson County, Nashville, Tennessee. Sam participated in several athletic activities including basketball, football, and track. Upon his High School graduation, Sam attended Aquinas Junior College where he was on the basketball team. Sam enlisted in the United States Army in 1983. He served in the Indiana and Tennessee National Guard and received a medical discharge. Sam accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age at Second Moravian Church in Indianapolis. He found a place to serve as a member of the Gospel Chorus and various youth groups and activities. Sam also served as part of the Youth Janitorial Team. Sam moved to Nashville and continued his service to God by serving in the Youth Department of First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill. Sam took pride in working as a DJ and Door Security at his father's nightclub. Sam worked several jobs including delivery person and warehouse worker. But Sam stated that his years as a truck driver traveling the country were the most rewarding to him. Sam lived a few years in Atlanta, Georgia, but considered both Nashville and Indianapolis his homes. Sam's health began to fail while living in Nashville and moved back to his birth home of Indianapolis to be with his children, mother, and brothers. He re-dedicated his life to Christ and became a member of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. If you knew Sam, you would know his two favorite sayings. When asked how he was doing, he would say, "I'm blessed by the best and praying for the rest!" At the end of his conversations, he would say, "I love you and there's nothing you can do about it". Sam had the gift of remembering the birthdates of family, friends, and even their children's birthdates. Sam also had a gift of assigning nicknames to everyone, some of which are still used today. Sam was preceded in death by his father, Robert Robinson; mother, Dorothy Ann Knox Robinson Mitchell; sister, Janet King; two brothers, Milton Earl, and Paschal Robinson and one grandson, Khalil Winston. He is survived by his wife, Nadine Robinson; Step-son, Angelo (LaCretia); sons, Samuel (Joy), and Solomon Allen; Step-son, Maurice Barr (Joy), and daughter, Mareesia Cothern; grandchildren Samilyah; Sammy Jr., and Jeremiah Allen; Kenynn Winston and Kensley Cothern; brothers: Dea (Vanessa) Robinson and Emory (Phyllis) Robinson; Stepmother, Sharon Robinson; Stepbrother Richard (Pam) Robinson; Honorary Brothers Greg Holman, Victor Breland, Steve Breland, Kenny Breland, Mark Breland, and Melvin Bullock; and a host of other relatives and friends.
