Obituary of Ronald Earl Nichols

Ronald Earl Nichols October 12, 1937 – March 26, 2020 Ronald Earl Nichols, 82, of Vero Beach Florida and former Indianapolis resident, passed away March 26, 2020 after a two year battle with cancer. He was greeted at heaven’s gate by his loving wife, Wanda, who preceded him in death on January 2nd 2016. Ronnie (as he was often called) was born in Linton Indiana on October 12, 1937 to parents William Nichols and Berniece (Calvert) Nichols, Who preceded him in death. He moved with his parents to Muncie, Indiana in 1940, where he spent his formative and young adult years. Ron graduated in 1955 from Muncie Central High School where he participated in ROTC. Ron met Wanda Buckles at the Southside Church of the Nazarene and they were married there on October 5, 1956. Ronnie was employed at a number of jobs in the Muncie area, mostly tool and die shops. In 1961, he was hired as a machinist at Allison Transmission in Indianapolis and commuted from Muncie for two years. He and his growing family then moved to Indianapolis. He retired in 1993 after 32 years of employment as a skilled tradesman in the cutter grinding department of Allison Gas Turbine. Ronnie then worked at Eli Lilly for several years before completely retiring. Ronnie was a dependable and dedicated employee who took pride in his work. Ronnie and his wife were strong believers in their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. They were long-time and active members of Nazarene churches, most recently the Southwest Church of the Nazarene. After moving to Vero Beach Florida in 2018, he attended Gracespring Church. Ronnie and Wanda enjoyed vacationing in Gatlinburg Tennessee and North Redington Beach Florida. They were annual visitors to Gaither Homecomings and the National Quartet Convention. Ronnie’s interests included hunting and fishing in his younger years, gospel music, swimming, family gatherings and playing the harmonica especially at family Christmas gatherings. He enjoyed watching the races, the Colts and the Pacers. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids. Ron is survived by his four children: Bradley Nichols (wife Lisa), Karen Whiteley ( Husband Jeffrey), Stephen Nichols and Angela Strange ( Husband Bradley) also brothers James Nichols ( wife Sandra) and Kenneth Nichols ( wife Linda): Seventeen grandchildren and forty three great grandchildren. Along with his parents and wife, Ron was preceded in death by his sister Janice Chambers. Ronnie will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.
