Obituary of Irene Owens

Irene Owens March 7, 1936 – February 14, 2020 Irene was born on March 7, 1936 in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky to the late Dully and Jepp Griffin. She married Vernon F. Owens, also of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky on March 8, 1957, who preceded her in death after 53 years of marriage. Irene was also preceded in death by her half-sister Elizabeth (Griffin) Johnson, half-brothers Clarence and Jim Griffin along with several very close aunts, one uncle and several cousins. Irene and Vernon lived in Speedway, Indiana and she worked full time for many years as a registrar at Winona Memorial Hospital and during that time she enrolled as a part time student in college courses at IUPUI. She graduated at the age of 59 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and worked at Plainfield Healthcare and then Brownsburg Healthcare until retirement. Irene loved to travel and always wished the vacation didn’t have to come to an end. She and Vernon traveled to Germany twice, Hawaii, Alaskan Land and Sea Tour, Disney Cruises, and all the Riverboat Cruises that were available down the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, to name a few. Irene traveled to Israel and Jerusalem with a church group along with many other destinations throughout the United States. She was a member of Speedway Baptist Church and attended Bible Study Classes and volunteered for Vacation Bible School along with nursery room duty. She volunteered at the Speedway Public Library and the Indiana State Museum and she was a member of the Red Hats Society. Irene is survived by her and Vernon’s only daughter, Sandy (John) Reichle, her grandchildren, Madison Reichle, Zachary Reichle, of Indianapolis and Chelsea (Collin) Steele and one great granddaughter, Charlotte Belle Steele of Las Vegas. There will be a graveside service at Brownsburg Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2020. Arrangements by Steven’s Mortuary.
