Della Pugh, a beacon of strength, resilience, and warmth, born on February 12, 1941, in Fort Valley, Georgia, passed away on February 26, 2026. Her life, spanning an inspiring 85 years, was a testament to the power of dedication, love, and a spirit of service. As Maya Angelou once said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Della embodied this sentiment in every aspect of her life.
Della was a resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, for the last nine years of her life, but her heart remained connected to the diverse communities she had touched throughout her life. For 30 years, she worked in the dietary department of Community Hospital, Munster, Indiana. Her commitment to her work in the healthcare field was not just an occupation, but a calling. She was known for her warm smile, her compassionate nature, and her ability to comfort those in need. She retired in 2003, but the impact of her work echoes in the halls of the hospital and in the hearts of those she served.
Della was a widowed matriarch, whose courageous spirit and unwavering love live on in her cherished daughter, Loretta Pugh. Della was preceded in death by her loving parents, Nelsie and Charlie Rumph. The strength of her character, the depth of her compassion, and the sincerity of her love will continue to inspire her loved ones. As we remember Della, let us be guided by her example and the words of Albert Schweitzer, "The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others."
