Obituary of Barbara J. Vargo

Barbara Joan Vargo, of Indianapolis, passed away on December 27, 2025. Born on February 9, 1932, to John and Ethel Vargo, Barb was a proud graduate of Indiana University and a lifelong Hoosier supporter.

Barb dedicated much of her life to education, serving as a physical education teacher and guidance counselor at Broad Ripple High School. She coached cheerleading and supported countless students over the years with encouragement, care, and enthusiasm. An adventurer at heart, she traveled the world with her camera and lifelong friend, Gerry. She also volunteered with the IU Physical Therapy Department during the summers and was a steadfast supporter of Camp Brosius. Barb was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Barbara was truly a ray of sunshine—always kind, endlessly positive, and deeply thoughtful. She loved her Scottie dogs, enjoyed bird watching, and filled her home with music and beautiful art. One of her greatest joys was cheering on Indiana University football and basketball, along with the Indiana Fever—especially Caitlin Clark. She was delighted to see IU crowned Big Ten Champions.

Barb is survived by her niece, Barbara Bailey Richardson of Wabash, and dear friend Sarah Boston of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ethel and John Vargo; her sister and brother-in-law, Beverly (Vargo) and Paul Bailey; great-nephew John Bailey Vaught; great-nephew Tech. Sgt. Nicholas Cozee; and lifelong friend Geraldine Arnold.

She will be deeply missed by her many dear friends—and by the furry friends who always knew she carried a Milk-Bone in her pocket, especially Louis and Franco.

Visitation will be held at Steven’s Mortuary on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will immediately follow at Washington Park North.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Brosius or the Indianapolis Humane Society.
