Obituary of Charlotte M. Horner
Charlotte Horner, a beloved matriarch and cherished member of her family and community, passed away after a remarkable life spanning over a century. Born on April 23, 1921, in Hammond, Indiana, Charlotte was raised by her father, Alan Lape and her grandmother Jennie Lape following the early loss of her mother, Evelyn (Bleau) Lape.
Charlotte graduated from Hammond High School, where she also worked for a time before moving to Indianapolis. On December 27, 1941, she married LeRoy Horner, shortly before his deployment in World War II, and on October 28, 1942, they welcomed their daughter, Charlene Anne. Charlotte would go on to embark on a career as an executive secretary at Allison Gas & Turbine in Speedway, Indiana, retiring in 1976.
After retirement, Charlotte and LeRoy embraced the Florida lifestyle, purchasing property in Cudjo Key and later settling in Holiday to be near her father. In Florida, Charlotte dedicated herself to community service as a volunteer deputy for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and assisted seniors with tax filing. In 2010, she returned to Indianapolis to be close to her family.
Charlotte was known for her warm spirit and love of music, actively participating in her church choir and delighting audiences with solo performances at Westside Garden Plaza. She remained engaged in community activities well into her later years, embodying a vibrant and generous spirit.
She is survived by her grandchildren Cindy Jeffers (Dale Stern) and Russell Jeffers (Jenise); great-grandchildren Joshua Jeffers (Hope), Kris Jeffers, Curt Jeffers (Shanna), Susanne Jeffers (Grant Jenkins), Nichole (Jeffers) Sharp (Jordan Sharp), Jacob Jeffers, and Nathan Jeffers (Erica); great-great-grandchildren Paige Jeffers, Shelby (Jeffers) Griffith (Chris Griffith), Karmen Davis, Samuel Jeffers, Juliana Patterson, Gabriella Jeffers, Josalyn Jeffers, Audriella Loomis, Broderick Loomis, Adriana Jeffers, Eastan Jeffers, Evangeline Jeffers, Ataleigh Brown, and Lowen Jeffers; and a great-great-great-grandchild, Cayden Griffith.
Charlotte was predeceased by her husband LeRoy Horner, daughter Charlene (Horner) Jeffers, and granddaughter Beverly (Jeffers) Gribbons.
Throughout her life, Charlotte treasured her faith and love of the Lord as well as family and friends, often reminiscing about her early days, including memorable trips and the joy shared over her Aunt Margaret's cooking. She embraced life’s changes with grace and gratitude, always amazed by the blessing of her longevity.
Charlotte Horner’s legacy of love, community service, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
