Obituary of Peggy L. McCool

Margaret L. “Peggy” McCool, age 75, of Plainfield, Ind. (formerly Indianapolis), passed away on Friday, Sept. 26, 2025.

Peggy was born on Dec. 3, 1949, to Kathleen (Quinlan) and Leonard Melton in Columbus, Ind.  She was a graduate of St. Agnes Academy in Indianapolis.  On Oct. 10, 1969, she married Pete McCool and went on to have four daughters.

Peggy’s most cherished moments were ones spent with her family. She was a loving grandmother, great-grandmother, mother, and sister. She had limitless pride and supportiveness for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her beloved Notre Dame football team.

Generous and full of laughter, Peggy’s home was always open. If Peggy knew you, you were her family, and no matter the hour, she would take time to check in. A deep listener, she was also quick to crack a joke and would always tell you what was on her mind. She was the rock of her family and community.

Peggy is survived by her husband of 55 years, Pete McCool; daughters Katie (Tom) Haapala of Plainfield, Ind., Molly Larison of Speedway, Ind., Kelly Steinmetz and Jason Thompson of Plainfield, Ind., Mary (Jason) Vidrich of Brownsburg, Ind.; grandchildren Stacie Kammerling, Michael McCool, Maureen Larison, Emily Steinmetz, Jennifer Shillings, Erin Steinmetz, Madison Haapala, Vivian Vidrich, Tori Vidrich, Elliott Brown, and Kassie Haapala; great-grandsons Brady McCool, Danny Shillings and Daxton Shillings; brothers Jim (Becky) Melton and John (Laura) Melton; several nieces and nephews; and several sisters by choice Vicki, Sue Ellen, Jeana, Dawn, Carol, and Shag.

Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at Stevens Mortuary (5520 W. 10th St., Indianapolis, IN), followed by a Rosary reading at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church 3354 W. 30th Street Indianapolis, on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. with internment to follow at West Ridge Park Cemetery (9295 West 21st St., Indianapolis, IN).
