Obituary of Kathleen Frances Bunn
Kathleen Frances (McIntosh) Bunn
January 20, 1941 – August 30, 2025
Kathleen Frances Bunn, lovingly known as “Kathy,” passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025. Born in Dayton, Ohio, on January 20, 1941, Kathy was the cherished daughter of the late William Emmett and Frances Catherine McIntosh. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Emmett and Shirley McIntosh, and her sister Mary Ann (Al) Kalal.
Kathy’s early years were filled with love and laughter, sharing a bedroom with her grandmother, Mary Ann Koepnick, and enjoying bi-weekly visits from her aunts, uncles, and cousins who lived nearby. These gatherings sparked her lifelong love of parties and card games, which she continued to enjoy throughout her life—Euchre, Pinochle, Bridge, Guts, and many more. Even as her memory faltered and she didn’t always remember the rules she taught her children and grandchildren for King’s Corners, Crazy Eights, and War, she was always ready to play. She also delighted in working on jigsaw and crossword puzzles, as long as she had someone to share it with.
On June 23, 1962, Kathy married the love of her life, Harry Bunn, and together they built a beautiful life in Indianapolis, Indiana. She embraced her new city with courage and warmth, formed decades-long friendships with Kathy Ferguson and Ken Winget through the Newcomers Organization, and became deeply involved in her community.
Kathy was a devoted parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church for over 60 years, where she sang alto in the choir, worked in the parish office, counted Sunday collections, co-chaired annual parish festivals, helped with funeral luncheons, served as room mom, chaperoned school field trips, and led eighth grade reading groups. She also served as a bingo volunteer for the Cardinal Ritter High School Parents Club.
A breast cancer survivor for nearly 30 years, Kathy lived life with energy and joy. She played tennis, bowled in leagues, coached softball, and never missed a chance to cheer on her children and grandchildren at kickball, baseball, volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, and football games; dirt bike races; and school Masses, plays, award ceremonies, and graduations. She also served as a graduate assistant for Dale Carnegie training sessions, always encouraging others to grow and thrive.
Kathy had a gift for making everyone feel special. She created magical memories through zoo trips, Christmas lights, Easter egg hunts, and thoughtful gifts. Her kindness extended to her community through Meals on Wheels deliveries, and her charm made every conversation memorable. She always made time to have a conversation.
She was a passionate traveler, exploring the world with Harry and often including her children, grandchildren, and dear friends in their adventures. From Disney parks to Europe, Cape Cod to Palm Springs, French Lick to Branson, and annual shopping trips with her daughters that always included a stay at Mount St. Francis, Kathy’s love of travel brought joy and connection to her extended family. On our many family road trips to visit Harry’s parents and siblings in Florida, cousins in Canada, or our aunts, uncles, and cousins (and the Esther Price candy store) in Dayton, Kathy always made sure the car was stocked with plenty of snacks and a cooler of drinks. Her children fondly remember going to the drive-in movies with a brown grocery bag filled with homemade popcorn and plenty of Kool-Aid.
Kathy was an avid reader, a musical theater enthusiast, a gracious hostess who made a great whiskey sour, and a cook and baker whose main ingredient was plenty of love. Her legacy lives on in the love she gave, the memories she created, and the family she cherished.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Harry Bunn; her children Mary Ann (Rodney) Deckard, Kerri (John Lindley) Reed, Gregory (John Johnson) Bunn, and Tricia Hall; her grandchildren Taylor (Jake) Strausbaugh, Sydney (Brooks) Lohr, Riley (Bailey Walters) Deckard, Trevor Bunn, and Sam Hall; her “bonus” grandchildren Sarah (Matt) Hornik, Michael (Rebecca Budimir) Johnson, and Katie Johnson; her great-grandchildren Sophie and Sadie Strausbaugh, Emma and Bowen Lohr, and Addison Hornik; as well as the many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her and whom she loved in return.
She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Scott Reed.
Kathy’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and joy. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Her family expresses their deepest appreciation to Jamie, Shay, Connie, and Kim of Aseracare Hospice and the staff at Northwest Manor, who took such good care of her. Thanks also to Jennifer Smith and Sharon Osborne who spent time with Kathy so Harry could continue his part-time work at the airport and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
