John was born in Decatur, Indiana to Cletus and Bette Miller on November 5, 1956. He attended Bellmont High School and graduated in 1975. He went on to earn his certifications as an EMT-Paramedic through Ivy Tech and Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.  He attended Butler University where he was a member of TKE Fraternity and co-founded the first EMS Response System for the University.  In 2004 he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies from IUPUI.

He worked as an EMT-Paramedic for over 30 years at various hospitals and fire departments.  They included Adams County EMS, Lawrence Township Fire Department, Pike Township Fire Department (as a Firefighter) and was a Lieutenant at Wayne Township Fire Department where he was an EMS Duty Officer.  John also worked as a Paramedic for the Indianapolis Airport Authority Fire Department, Wishard Ambulance Service and St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.  He was also known as an Instructor of CPR, Advanced Life Support, and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support to laypersons, EMTs, paramedics, nurses, and doctors. In 1987-88 he earned the Preceptor Award at Wishard for his dedication and effort in training.  John took a lot of pride in his service as a paramedic and was honored to take his skills to serve for almost 20 years on the Safety Team for the Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where he earned the 1983 Renner Express Speedway Chief Steward Safety Award.  He was a member of the Indianapolis 500 Oldtimers Club, a past Prelate and Member of the Speedway Moose Lodge 500, and a member of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics.

John enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, running, bicycling, and sailing. He participated in Triathlons and in 1984 was able to qualify for a spot in the Ironman in Hawaii.  When he was younger he raced motocross and played the drums in various local bands.  He even learned how to fly small planes out of Eagle Creek Airport.
