Obituary of Mary Kay Lake

Mary “Kay” Lake, 86, peacefully passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Hooverwood Living in Indianapolis, IN.

Kay was born on August 9, 1938, in Crawfordsville, IN to O. L. (Lawrence) and Maurine C. (Caplinger) Servies. She was a 1958 graduate of Danville High School, Danville, IN. On August 1, 1958, Kay married Howard “Brownie” Brown in Danville, IN. To this union two daughters were born, Noreen Lynn and Hazel Maurine. Brownie passed away in July 1975. Later in life Kay remarried and divorced.

Kay operated the elevator in the Hendricks County Court House. She also worked multiple positions within the retail industry over the course of her working career. In being creative through her hands, Kay was passionate about crocheting, sewing, quilting, flower gardens and puzzles. She took pride in making dozens of face masks during COVID in 2020 and giving them to those in need. She was always excited to teach others to crochet. Her favorite color was purple, and she enjoyed a good strawberry milkshake.

Kay lived in Wyoming for 20 years enjoying the beautiful natural scenery. She returned to her home state of Indiana in 2013.

Kay is survived by her daughters; Noreen Brown, Indianapolis, IN and Hazel (Reece) Beck, Spearfish, SD, grandson; Daniel (Dani) Smith, Gillette, WY, granddaughter; Robbie (Crystalle Foy) Jackson, Indianapolis, IN, granddaughter; Brianna (Ryan Weber) Smith, Cheyenne, WY, nine great-grandchildren, and countless nieces and nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Howard (Brownie) Brown, brother: Rex Servies, identical twin sister; Anita Gay Salsman, and brother; Gery Servies.

Final care is being handled by Stevens Mortuary and no services will be taking place. Kay’s final resting place will be at the South Cemetery in Danville, IN. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all staff members of Hooverwood Living and A.R.N. Hospice for the care Kay received during the final years of her life.
