Obituary of Evelyn O. Hemelgarn

Evelyn O. Hemelgarn, 92, of Indianapolis passed away on April 1, 2025. She was born Indianapolis to Albert and Thelma Lewis on November 1, 1932. She worked as a bank teller for AFNB and now Chase Bank, also in the cafeteria at St. Christopher School and Northwest High School. Evelyn was a founding member of “Murders Row”; a group of women who harassed ABA officials during Indiana Pacer games in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. She was a Charter member of St. Gabriel Parish, where she was a kickball coach for many years and she enjoyed working at St. Gabriel’s festivals and helping out at the mercy meals. She participated in many card clubs throughout the years, and bowling leagues at Eagledale Bowl. Evelyn was an avid fan of the Colts, Pacers, Cubs and Notre Dame. She enjoyed traveling with friends, time at the York Pool and clambakes with friends. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Harold Eugene “Gene” Hemelgarn; her parents, Albert and Thelma Lewis; and sisters, Alice Shufford, Josephine Archer, Edna McCarty; and brother, Joe Lewis. She is survived by her daughters, Jackie (Mike) Murphy and Donna (Joe) Fischer of Indianapolis, IN; granddaughters, Colleen Murphy of Indianapolis, IN and Shannon Murphy (Noah) Pusey of Lafayette, IN; grandsons, Josh Murphy and Jakob Fischer both of Indianapolis, IN; great granddaughters, Macie Murphy and Ashley Murphy of Indianapolis, IN; great grandsons, Urijah Pusey, Teagan Pusey and Gannon Pusey all of Lafayette, IN; brother, Bo Lewis of Indianapolis, IN; brother-in-law, Don (Judy) Hemelgarn of Avon, IN; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in honor of Evelyn can be made to Riley Children’s Foundation 500 N Meridian Street #100 Indianapolis, IN 46204. Masses can be said at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church or St. Christopher Catholic Church.
