Veronica,

I am so sorry to hear of Kevin’s passing. He was always one of my favorite patients even though I wished I could do more for him. I know how much he hated coming to see me, but he always took it like a champ and was so thankful. Prayers and hugs for you and your family.

I’m not sure what day I first saw Kevin get on the St Christopher, Farley edition bus driven by Mr Wertz. Probably not the first day of school for the first grade. So probably within the next few weeks we were riding the same school bus to school. Not sure why Kevin and I became friends. Maybe just a love or obsession with the Indy 500. Kevin had all the kool STP stickers from his father being a photographer. He even had a photo he took at the track put in Sports Illustrated. Under his father’s name because Bob developed the picture.

When we were 9th graders, we decided to go to the first day of Qualifications at the track. Not naming any names but there were 3 of us from Farley Edition and 3 from Chapel Hill. We brought alcohol we’d taken from our parents. One of us brought vodka in a used shampoo bottle. It tasted like shampoo. Don’t really remember the specifics but we ended up walking at least from Farley to the 500. This meant we had to cross the 21st street train trestle. Some of us had to crawl both ways. It rained, like it always does. We decided to play volleyball over the infield fence with a ball of our socks. You can’t make stuff like this up. The Security Guards for the track gave us a talking to about behavior.

The next year we decided we would be at the 16th street walk in gate when it opened on race day. The track put up a ticket booth and we all bought tickets. The cannon went off and we all ran into the infield. No one took our tickets. We never brought them again.

So pretty much every year we went to the 500. Maybe we missed one year when Crazy Dave wrecked my truck. Long story. We had so much fun every year just throwing the frisbee around the golf course.

When we were 20 Kevin, a few friends and I went camping in Colorado. The night before we left his father Bob helped us build a wooden box to put on top of my truck for luggage. From then on we used it as a platform to view the race, and we would bring in a keg with the truck.

Kevin was the Best Man at my wedding. He was my best friend for most of my life. I’m the Godfather of his daughter Ali. Ali and his son Kris used to call me Uncle Bill when they were little. Kevin was the closest thing to a brother I ever had.

The last time I visited with Kevin we listened to Late For the Sky by Jackson Browne. The vinyl edition. There is a song that starts with “Every one I’ve ever known has wished me well. Anyway that’s how it seems it’s hard to tell. Maybe people only ask you how you’re doing cause that’s easier than letting on how little they could care, but when you know that you’ve got a real friend somewhere. Suddenly all the others are so much easier to bare “.I told him that whenever I listened to that song it made me think of him.

I’m not the most religious person even though I was raised Catholic. You’re gonna have a hard time convincing me that Kevin's suffering was part of Gods plan. Can we all agree that he is much better off now, then the current hell we are all living through?

So this would not be complete without an Eagles lyric. He was a huge fan.

Now my man’s got it made he’s gone far beyond the pain, and we who must remain go on living just the same.

Rest in peace brother you will be missed.

Kevin led a joyful life. Kevin was fun. We love this picture of Kevin posted. It shows his joyful spirit. He enjoyed people and engaged everyone openly and forthrightly. His spirit was fun loving, responsible and playful. Kris’s obituary is well written and very accurate.

Kevin was interesting to converse with. I enjoyed talking with Kevin about his love of sports. He had deep knowledge about IU Basketball. He also shared knowledge about his aviation career.

We have happy memories of the parties Kevin and Veronica held at their homes. They invited everyone and were very welcoming. Veronica and Kevin always were helpful. Their attitude about life is inspiring.

Kevin also faced his life challenges squarely. In earlier life he embraced recovery and adjusted his life accordingly. Later he was honest and open about his health problems. Which showed Kevin’s impressive internal integrity.

Veronica, Allie and Kris cared very well for Kevin while he was sick. We are grateful his suffering was minimizes as much as possible.

We are both very sad and relieved that Kevin has passed. His long-term health concerns were a heavy burden for him and his family. We are thankful to God that his pain has passed. Kevin Krumb will be missed.

We were so sorry to hear of Kevin’s passing. Even though we only knew him for 10 years, the stories he shared with us made us feel like we had known him since high school. He was a wonderful neighbor who was always willing to help when needed. We enjoyed it when he played his music outside, as he said “ the Eagles were the Best Band ever “and we were so happy he and Veronica were able to enjoy one more concert together! You loved to grill out and we enjoyed every cookout you invited us to. We will miss you Kevin, but we know you are in a better place, and in no more pain. Don’t worry about Veronica, you raised great kids that will look after her, and we will keep an eye on her too as well as all the friends. Be the Guardian Angel to this grandkids as I know you will. We love you
