Obituary of Richard Clare Thomson

Richard “Dick” Clare Thomson, 70, of Speedway, IN passed away on October 20, 2017. Dick was born in Lafayette, IN to Robert Clare and Mary G. (Fassnacht) Thomson, both preceding him in death. He was a lifelong resident of Speedway, IN, a 1965 graduate of Speedway High School, a National Honor Society Member and a lifetime member of Saint Christopher Catholic Church. Dick earned his Associates Degree in Accounting from IUPUI. He was employed by Allison Transmission for 34 years, having retired in 1999 as the Heat Treat General Foreman. Dick was also a successful entrepreneur having managed / owned a gasoline service station and a bar. After retirement, Dick worked part-time at the American Legion Post 500 for 12 years. He also gave a lot of his time volunteering for the St. Christopher Food Pantry, Seeds of Hope, The Hope Chest, St. Vincent de Paul and The Children’s Bureau. He was a member of the Sons of American Legion, VFW Auxiliary and AMVETS Auxiliary. He was an avid race fan, attending the Indy 500 for 36 years and later the Brickyard 400 for 22 years, both with his family and friends. Dick is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Kathleen J. (Thomas) Thomson of Speedway, IN; son, Scott C. Thomson of Speedway, IN; daughters, Jill (Jay) Newnum of Fishers, IN and Lisa (Nick) Work of Speedway, IN; step-daughters, Amanda (Greg) Petrovato of Easthampton, MA and Anna Waggoner of Speedway, IN; grandsons, Jaykob Newnum and Jayden Newnum both of Fishers, IN and Ethan Work of Speedway, IN; granddaughter, Addison Work of Speedway, IN; step-grandson, Cosmo Petrovato of East Hampton, MA; sisters, Sheryl Leary of Ione, CA, Joan Relf of Danville, IN, Jane (Mark) Marye of Fairland, IN and Mary Ellen (Joe) Kutcher of Indianapolis, IN; brothers, John Thomson of Roswell, GA and Mark (Judy) Thomson. Visitation will be held at Stevens Mortuary 5520 W. 10th Street Indianapolis, IN on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 from 4:00 PM until 7:30 PM, with a Rosary to conclude evening services at 7:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 26, 2017 at St. Christopher Catholic Church 5301 W 16th St, Indianapolis, IN 46224.
